John Asquith and family
*** WORK IN PROGRESS ***
We know from Miriam Middleton's notes (see Starting Points) that Annie Wozencroft worked for a Mr. Asquith, who Miriam thought was a businessman of some sort. When we look for Annie in the 1891 (5 April 1891) census we find that she was then living with the Asquith family.

What else can we find about the Asquiths?
From the census we know that John and his daughter, Emily, were both teachers of music, and in the Barnsley Chronicle for 20 September 1890 {Microfilm at Barnsley Local Studies Library} we see notices announcing the new term for their lessons.
| MR. J ASQUITH, Mus. B. Cantab., L. Mus. T.C.L., F.S.Sc., Organist, Barnsley Old Church. - The next Term will begin Monday, September 22nd. - Victoria house, Victoria Road. |
| MISS ASQUITH, R. A. M., Student Certificated Teacher, Diploma, Associate in Music, Associate Pianist, T.C.L., Certificates of the First Class. Pianoforte Playing, Harmony, Counterpoint, and Musical History, S.A. London. Professional Pupil of the late Sir Julius Benedict. Next Term will begin Monday, September 22nd. - Victoria House, Victoria Road. |
The Borough of Barnsley Burgess Rolls for 1891, 1892 and 1893 {Hard copy at Barnsley Local Studies Library} also show John Asquith at Victoria Road (West Ward, Div 1). The entries show no house number and though other names match adjactent entries in the 1891 census, the house numbers differ (but are consistent within the rolls). No further years have been checked.
Can we find any link to suggest how Annie came to Barnsley? Did she come specifically to work for the Asquiths?
