Rachel Ann Coates / Wozencroft (1841-?1873)

As with Fransis Wozencroft, the starting point for the story of Rachel is Annie Wozencroft's birth certificate (15th March 1871) which gives her mother's name as Rachel Ann Wozencroft, formerly Coates, and her address as 'Back 30, Egerton Lane, Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield'. This address leads us to the 1871 census {Sheffield Local Studies Library - Microfilm N747 - Ecclesall Bierlow, Enumeration District 10, Folio 59, Page 25. Schedule 140} which shows Francis and Rachel and their family in the township of Ecclesall Bierlow at Back 30, Egerton Lane ...

In the 1881 Census {Sheffield Libraries Microfilm M 1822} Annie is shown as an orphan in the Union Workhouse, and from Miriam Middleton's notes we think that Rachel died when Annie was 2 years old (~1873-4).

We know from the 1871 census that Rachel was born ~1841-2 and so far this is the best match found. Check this out - why is page number missing - did Chesterfield then cover Darnall (as place of birth shown in 1871 census)???

The place of registration, the age, the date and the rarity of the surname here suggest that this is Annie's mother, and therefore that she indeed die when Annie was 2 years old.

Searching for the Wozencroft name in this area does throw up a few matches (see Other Wozencrofts in Sheffield page) and these include 'Emma Wozencroft' whose birth and death were also registered in the June quarter of 1873. This suggests that Rachel may have died in childbirth.
