Adrian's Wood Turning
| Bowls | Vases and Boxes | Mushrooms | Misc Odds and Ends |
An aspect of turning that I enjoy (most of the time), is working with
a natural medium
and accepting the variation and flaws that nature has hidden within it.
Cracks and staining, as well as the grain and fugure of the wood, are part
of the material - making use of them is part
of the pleasure (as well as a challenge).
I do use some seasoned wood for more 'precise' pieces such as boxes, but I
like to use wood begged from neighbours and friends when they are trimming
or removing trees. As it dries some of the wood becomes fit only as
firewood, but it is good to see something (hopefully) worthwhile emerge
from a totally raw piece of material. Some of my turnings have even
started life as logs sold as firewood!
(If you are ever trimming Yew or Laburnum (or fruit trees, or any hard woods
- not the Leylandii!) do contact a wood turner, they may be your friend for
life.)
Most of my work is small or even 'minature' - the scales on the
pictures above are in centimetres and millimetres!
Its partly because I use a small lathe, but also because I like working at
this scale. Each piece evolves as it is turned (dare I say 'evolves as it revolves') and is
unique (Hilary would say they are all prototypes because the second one is never
quite as satisfying to make as the first).
If you want to see some examples of my turning 'in the flesh', go to the
London
Road Gallery here in Sheffield. Its run by a cooperative of
craftspeople and has a constantly changing selection of work for sale from books
and baskets to weaving and wrought iron. There is currently work from at
least three turners - all different!
Take a look at the galleries above - if you're a turner be gentle in your
comments, though comments are always welcome.
(Apologies - the descriptions in the galleries are not all completed - they will be - I promise!!!!)
